Adelaide 36ers vs Sydney Kings Preview

Sydney Kings are set to start their NBL25 campaign with a dominant victory over the Adelaide 36ers at Hoops Fest in Perth. While both teams have undergone changes in the offseason, Sydney’s depth and scoring options will likely be too much for Adelaide’s defense, which struggled last season.

The Matchups That Matter

Sydney's multiple scoring threats, including Jaylen Adams, Xavier Cooks, and Jonah Antonio, will challenge Adelaide's defensive unit. Cam Oliver will look to dominate down low, with Sydney’s forward positions hotly contested by elite talent. Adelaide, on the other hand, will be hoping for Montrezl Harrell to make an immediate impact in his first game for the 36ers, particularly with Jarell Martin sidelined due to injury.

Why Sydney Wins

The Kings have a stacked roster with talent at every position, making them early favourites to win the NBL25 championship. They were the highest-scoring team last season and carried that offensive form into the preseason Blitz.

The King's offseason changes gives them an unmatchable depth that allows them to rotate multiple key players and not lose any of their strike on offence or defence which will likely overwhelm an Adelaide defence. Next Star Alex Toohey showed his potential in the Blitz, averaging 25 points and shooting efficiently and can potentially blindside Adelaide.

The key question for Sydney will be how they manage their rotations, as they boast 12 players capable of significant minutes.

Why Adelaide Wins

The 36ers have shown resilience through early-season challenges, including a coaching change and injury setbacks. Montrezl Harrell’s addition brings NBA-calibre talent to Adelaide, and if he can quickly integrate with the team, the 36ers could surprise with a strong showing in their opener. Adelaide’s ability to rebound and fight for second-chance points will be crucial in keeping them competitive.

Key Stats

  • Sydney scored between 90-101 points in all three Blitz games.

  • The Kings scored the most points per game last season at 95.4.

  • Adelaide allowed opponents to shoot 44.3% from the field last season, the 3rd worst in the NBL.

  • Sydney kept 2 of 3 opponents under 80 points at the Blitz.
