The Million Dollar Men of the NBL

For much of the league’s history, the idea of a player earning one million dollars in a single NBL season seemed distant. In NBL26, that milestone is not only a reality, but four players are reportedly earning above that figure. It marks a significant step forward in the evolution of the competition.

The NBL has experienced remarkable growth in recent years. International broadcast partnerships, including a major agreement with ESPN, have expanded its global reach. The standard of play has risen to a level that is now regarded among the best outside the NBA. With this elevated profile has come an increase in financial investment, enabling the league to compete with other top-tier competitions worldwide.

The NBL has built a reputation as a proven pathway to the NBA and as a destination for players looking to return to the highest level. This appeal has attracted elite talent who might otherwise choose established markets in Japan, Europe, or other strong leagues. Historically, the challenge has been retaining players in their prime, with many leaving for larger contracts overseas.

That landscape is changing. The NBL is now able to offer players both a legitimate route to the NBA and competitive salaries, while also providing the benefits of living and competing in Australia and New Zealand. This combination of professional opportunity, financial reward, and lifestyle is positioning the league as an increasingly attractive option for top-level athletes.

The four players reported to be earning seven-figure salaries in NBL26 are Bryce Cotton, Jo Lual-Acuil Jr, Jack McVeigh, and Xavier Cooks. Parker Jackson-Cartwright is expected to join this group next season in the second year of his contract.

This development reflects more than just individual earnings. It is an indication of the NBL’s growing financial strength, its ability to attract and retain marquee players, and its continued rise in the global basketball landscape. With increased investment, expanding audiences, and a proven track record of player development, the NBL is well-positioned to continue drawing some of the biggest names in international basketball.
